I have a fascination with musical instruments played without human interaction. This is another instrument that falls into this fascination. The Aeolian Wind Harp is often used as a decorative object in gardens and things. It’s often seen as an alternative to wind chimes. The wind blows through the harp, causing the strings to vibrate and produce different pitches in a chord.

A new take on an old favorite, The Rocket Launcher is an instrument similar to the washtub bass, but has more strings and is a bit more complicated. It also sounds nothing like the Washtub Bass. It actually sounds a lot like a distorted steel guitar.

Episode 10 of the Weird Instrument Series: The Daxophone

Now this, THIS is a weird one. You’ve got to hear this thing to believe it. The Daxophone is an instrument invented by guitarist Hans Reichel. Its design is simple: A single wooden blade (which can be changed to other blades for desired timbre and effect) fixed on a block containing a contact microphone, mostly played with a violin bow. This instrument is perhaps the weirdest I’ve introduced here, which is why it’s quite fitting for the 10th episode (YAYYYYYYY!).

Here’s a clip of an excerpt of a piece written for daxophone. I’m pretty sure there’s a few being played here, but I can’t tell. I’m just not used to the sound yet.
